Places to Visit
We would particularly recommend:-
- Ben Nevis - A good day out but not unless the weather is fine! Ben Nevis is Britain's highest mountain. There is a visitors centre located in Glen Nevis where you can purchase maps and equipment for your walk/climb. You can also get some much needed advice and guidance!
- Glen Nevis - Where Rob Roy and Braveheart were filmed. There are some wonderful walks and views here, with Ben Nevis in sight from whereever you are.
- Glencoe - You will drive through Glencoe on the way up to Fort William. The mountains of Glencoe are a mecca to the climber. The Aonach Dubh is one of the three sisters - "faith, hope and charity".
- Aonach Mor - This is the seventh highest mountain the UK. Experience the wonderful cable car ride to the top and then visit the Snowgoose Restaurant and appreciate the magnificent views. This really is worthwhile when the weather is fine.
- Glenfinnan Monument - A wonderful place of natural beauty. You will see the Glenfinnan viaduct (where Harry Potter was filmed) and the Glenfinnan Monument.
- Mallaig - Drive to Mallaig and stop off at the White Sands of Morar. Catch a ferry from Mallaig to the Isle of Skye or alternatively travel by steam train (from Fort William to Mallaig) and view the awesome Highland scenery.
- Oban - About an hour and a quarter away, Oban is a busy coastal town and well worth a visit. Catch a ferry from there to the Isle of Mull.
- Isle of Mull - There are various ways of getting to Mull. Take the Corran Ferry (about 8 miles from Fort William) and then drive to Lochaline and catch another ferry to Mull. Do visit Tobermory when you are there, a beautiful town where the children's favourite "Balamory" is filmed.
- Drumnadrochit and Fort Augustus - A wonderful day out. Augustus has a little animal farm which is well worth a visit, together with some wonderful Highland scenery. Drumnadrochit is the home of Nessie and there is a visitors centre there which charts the history of Loch Ness.
